As a follow-up to Chick's excellent Linux Command Line class, I will be teaching a class on using the vi editor on Thursday, November 5, 2009. Vi is ugly, evil, and absolutely essential to becoming a UNIX power user. Because ugly though it may be, it's also fast and it's the only editor you can count on being present in an emergency situation. The executable is only 270k, and you can run it on a 300 baud connection.

You can't really consider yourself a power Linux user unless you can use the command line. Come to the Capitol Area District Library Thursday, October 29th at 6:30pm. You should bring a computer with Linux or another UNIX-like operating system installed.

The voting is in, and it has selected the Sky theme for the website. That's now the default theme, and I have removed the other themes from the website.

The only thing we're currently missing is integration with a calendar. That will be coming shortly, once I have some things figured out.

With the upgrade to the new version of Drupal, we thought it would be a good idea to start over with a bunch of other things as well. I've added new features to this install that weren't in previous versions (and couldn't be easily added).

• Friendly URLs, so that this page has the URL story/welcome-new-gllug-website.html instead of node/5
• A new look (plain at the moment, but a nicer look is planned).
• Friendly usernames. It wasn't immediately obvious who cdowling was, but it's easy to work out who Clay Dowling is.
